The Characteristics Of Affiliate Marketing

What's affiliate marketing exactly? That's a question often asked by those who've heard the term before, but aren't sure what it is. An affiliate program is a very simple concept. It requires you to sell a product through a link provided by the merchant. If and when you make a sale, you're paid a commission. To effectively launch an affiliate program, you'd need to have a website or blog, where you can post a link to the merchant.

The concept is simple and many affiliate marketers earn a 5-figure income from it. Some people may have told you that all you need to do is set up a website, and post a link to the product you're promoting. Then simply wait for the money to roll in. However, it's not quite that easy. It's true that you don't need a high school diploma or a college degree to become an affiliate. But you do need to put in some effort to succeed at affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing is an easy way to earn money in comparison to a regular day job. However, you need to devote at least 4 to 5 hours every day to your program. After you've joined a particular program, your first task is to drive traffic (people) to your site, and then re-direct them to the merchant's site, where they'll (hopefully) purchase the product or service that being offered. You can't just put up a website and hope that traffic would just magically flow in.

A proper understanding of what affiliate marketing involves, will tell that you can't select just any product and become an affiliate for it. You need to choose a product that has a market. Moreover, you should choose a product that you know something about. This is important because you'll need to write articles about the product, and submit them to various article directories that will help you get targeted traffic to your website.

As far as your website is concerned, you'd need to work on the layout as well as the content. Looks are important because that's what will hook your visitors. Value-laden and easy-to-read content will entice visitors to browse through your site. If they like what they see and read, they'll click on the link which should lead them to the merchant's site.

You'd also need to work on getting your website top rankings on all the major search engines. So now if and when someone asks you what affiliate marketing is, you can tell that person that it's a great way to earn an excellent income online, but you'll only get out of it what you put into it.
